Considering a destination wedding? Mexico is one of our favorite destination wedding locations! The country is just a short plane ride away and features many luxury 5-star resorts, beautiful beaches, a vibrant culture, cities that are full of color and character and delicious cuisine. We’re sharing about our recent trip to Mexico and the stunning ALHI member properties we visited during the World Romance Travel Conference.
First on our itinerary was the city of Guanajuato in central Mexico. Known for its colonial architecture and narrow streets and alleyways, there’s a famous alley called Callejón del Beso (Alley of the Kiss) because the balconies are close enough for a couple to reach across and kiss. Upon our arrival, we headed straight to a Legends of Zorro dinner party. Everyone dressed the part in their best Zorro outfits and enjoyed authentic Mexican food and drinks while dancing in a beautiful venue!
The next day, we toured Guanajuato and attended the conference. We got to hear from several great speakers throughout the travel, tourism and wedding industries. We then stopped at a beautiful venue before heading to San Miguel, where they had several vendors set up dinner tables and create a full three course meal. Something that made it unique was that every other person at the table received a different meal. The tables in the back had a different chef than the ones in the front, too. So, you really received completely different meals throughout the lunch. It was super fun and a very unique experience. I would love to incorporate this into an upcoming 2023 wedding! Talk about adding in some uniqueness for wedding guests!
On day three, we went to San Miguel De Allende and stayed at the beautiful Live Aqua Urban Resort. We were greeted with cocktails, live mariachi bands and mojigangas. If you’ve seen giant paper mache puppets of a bride and groom at a wedding in Mexico, that’s what a mojiganga is! That night, we had the traditional callejoneada where they march through the colonial town and sing with the mariachi band and donkeys carrying tequila. It is an experience in itself! We spent the day there on day four to experience a full conference and market to meet with tourism boards and other vendors. That night, we enjoyed the beautiful hotel scenery and enjoyed a night out in the colonial town with everyone!
We attended a Day of the Dead Dinner to end the trip and it was magical! Here in America, we might have misconceptions about Dia De Los Muertos. But in Mexico, this holiday is so much a part of their vibrant culture. For locals, it’s a beautiful opportunity to exchange mourning for celebration, honoring both life and death with food, drink, music and dancing as if their passed loved ones were there to enjoy a meal with them. The dinner was filled with local vendors who set up little street-like markets of traditional cuisine. From authentic Mexican tacos to street corn, and everything in between, it was an amazing peek into the culture.
Lastly, we spent the next three days out at the Fiesta Americana Hacienda in Queretaro. From the moment we stepped onto the property, I was taken aback by the cobblestone entrance with trees cascading over the drive. This would be so magical for a dinner setup. Their restaurants and the food were amazing! The staff and service was unmatched and they even have their own winery (and will soon be bottling). How fun would it be to gift a bottle of your venue’s wine upon guests’ arrival in a welcome basket?
